Before you’re going to the airport, you should think about how you can make yourself most comfortable on your seat. I prefer to wear stretchy jeans or leggings on a long-distance flight, as well as my favourite cozy sweater. Comfortable clothes are essential for your well-being in-flight, as well as thick socks that you can wear during the flight. There are also pillows and blankets available on long distance trips. If those don’t lie on your place, ask the crew. They will be happy to help you. If you need more tips on how to make a long flight comfy, CONTINUE BELOW.
2. THINK ABOUT YOUR DESTINATION
Focus on your destination. Remember what is awaiting you, remember how much you are looking forward to it. If you’re on the road to holidays, you can take along a travel guide in your hand luggage. Write down the sights and places you want to visit. Plan your stay in every detail and think about all the great moments you will have. If you’re on the flight back home, look at all the pictures that you've shot during your trip with your mobile phone or camera.
3. LEARN BREATHING TECHNIQUES
For effective relaxation of the entire body and your mind, you should learn various breathing techniques a few weeks before departure. These techniques will help you in case of anxiety and panic attacks. They will help you to focus on the essentials and to calm down your nerves. There are a few apps too, that also work offline. I already tried out a few ones and started with basic exercises during my everyday life.
4. LISTEN TO THE SAFETY INSTRUCTION
Next time you fly don’t forget to carefully listen to the safety briefing. Memorize the emergency exits, count the rows to get there and read the safety sheet in front of your seat. This may sound a little counter-productive, but it’s actually very effective. To know the exact steps of the safety briefing will give you a feeling of control and security. Let’s be honest, how many times did you have heard the safety instructions? Very often, I guess. But can you repeat everything they say in detail?
5. NATURAL SEDATIVE
Sometimes there is nothing else that helps to calm down your nerves. I'm talking about sedatives. I think it is very important that you try it the natural way, before you go to the doctor and get prescribes strong drugs. There are so many different natural sedatives. Lavender, for example, is one of them. the smell is calming and has an analytic effect on your body and mind. If you drink it as a tea, lavender helps you to fall asleep more easy. Another effective natural sedative is Valerian. The advantage of this one is that it is a very fast-acting sedative. It’s available in a variety of forms such as tea, pills or drops. You can get it in the pharmacy, health stores or even in drug-stores. Don’t forget to check which dosage you need before you take it.
6. TREAT YOURSELF
Chocolate doesn't only make us happy, it calms us down, too. That’s why you should take a piece with you on the air-plane. Or fruit, cereal bars or whatever it is you like to snack. In addition, you should have a proper meal a few hours before boarding. But don’t eat something too heavy. Studies show, that when you eat something before the flight, your body is distracting not only in terms of digestion, but also uneasy feelings will be reduced.
7. APPS AGAINST FEAR OF FLYING
That might sound strange, but yes, there are actually some apps to tackle your fear of flying. In my research, I stumbled over an app called SOAR for a couple of times and downloaded it. The app is available as a free basic version and as an upgrade with online courses. I have the basic version and find it very useful so far. There are not many different function but anyway I really like the mind games and will try them out on my next trip.
8. BOOK THE RIGHT SEAT
The best thing you can do in order to get your desired seat, is to be as fast as you can when the online check-in opens. The best seats in an aircraft, according to different articles, are the wings. Here you can feel the least of the speed and movement of the plane. I personally prefer aisle seats. So I do not feel restricted and I know I can get up whenever I want.
9. DISTRACT YOURSELF
The most important thing to do in order to have a calm long-distance flight is definitely the right distraction. There are many possibilities. You can either distract yourself by watching movies on the in-flight entertainment, or you can listen to music. In addition, you can bring your own distraction like a good book or an audio book. If you want to be a little bit more active and creative, you can also take a colouring book with you on board. It really doesn't matter what you do, as long as it distracts your fear. Personally, I often go through all my photos on my phone. I delete old ones, sort my apps and so on. That takes some time and distract me.
10. ACCEPT THE ANXIETY
This may sound banal, but it’s the most important point to overcome your fear of flying. Accept your anxiety, don’t play it down and don’t lie about it. Tell you friends and family and talk about it. If you’re travelling alone, don’t hesitate to tell the crew or your neighbour. Open up about your fear. To hold it back will cause unnecessary stress.
..And always remember, that there are thousands of fatal car accidents in this world, every day, but you wouldn't stop driving cars, would you? According to a study, taking the car is 12 times as dangerous as flying. In addition, a train ride is 3 times more. It is even more likely to have a fatal accident in your office, as on long-distance flight.
